13 weeks, week by week
The next quarter in weekly steps: the view for spotting a tight week before it arrives, when there is still time to chase an invoice or move a payment.
12 months, month by month
The year ahead in monthly steps: the view for planning a hire, a large purchase or the corporation tax bill.
What is in each sheet
- Money in
- Invoices paid by clients (by the date you expect the money) and anything else you can rely on.
- Money out
- Net pay, suppliers and bills, rent and overheads, VAT, PAYE and corporation tax, loan repayments.
- Running balance
- Each closing balance becomes the next opening balance, so the whole forecast moves when you change one figure.
- Buffer check
- Enter the lowest balance you want to keep once. Any period below it turns red, and a summary shows the lowest point and when it falls.
How to fill it in
- Enter today's bank balance, the first week (or month) and your cash buffer in the yellow cells at the top.
- Put each unpaid sales invoice in the period you realistically expect the money, not the invoice date. The debtor days calculator shows how late your customers usually pay.
- Put every bill, payroll run, rent payment and loan repayment in the period it is due.
- Add VAT, PAYE and corporation tax on their due dates. The free VAT, PAYE and corporation tax tools give the dates.
- Read the check column and the summary under the table. A period in red is below your buffer: see how much cash buffer you need.
- Each week (or month), replace the forecast with what actually happened and roll forward.
The step-by-step guide to the 13-week version is in the 13-week cash flow forecast guide.
